Book Event for Maine Rivers!
Our friend Terry Martin is doing a good deed for Maine Rivers. On Saturday, December
10th, she'll be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of her late husband’s
book, Thunder from the Mountains, to Maine Rivers. Terry’s husband was
Edward “Doc” Martin, legendary Rumford physician, and his posthumously published
book is an Indian history of Maine in novel form. Doc Martin cared deeply about
the health of his community, and about the health of the Androscoggin River -
and Terry’s lovely gesture is a way to support Maine Rivers' work to clean up
the Androscoggin. She'll be at Auburn's Book Burrow Cafe and Bookstore on Center
Street on Saturday from 1-3, sitting behind a big pile of books! Happy holidays!

The
Book Burrow Cafe and Bookstore on Center Street in Auburn will host a book
event of the newly released historical novel.
Thunder From The Mountains
on Saturday, December 10, 2005 from 1pm to 3pm.
The book is an Indian history
of Maine in novel form as it might have been written by an Androscoggin Wabenaki
living in the territory called Mayne during the late 17th and early 18th centuries;
more specifically, the years 1650 to 1724.
Dr. Ed Martin, a local family
physician practiced medicine in Maine during his entire medical career. He first
became interested in the Native American culture and its history years ago when
he studied the history of the Androscoggin River and the Native people who depended
on the resources of the river for their livelihood. He studied the effects of
air and water pollution on his patient population and became a voice for those
too sick to speak for themselves. He died in 2001 from what he believed was a
dioxin related cancer.
While pursuing his interest in art and antiques,
Martin came across old land deeds that offered helpful information to these Native
people during the land claim issue.
He was truly fascinated by the Wabenaki
history and its culture. It was at this point that he began to formulate a novel
based on Wabenaki history.
Four years after his death, his widow took the
completed 435 page manuscript and saw it through the editing, layout and printing
process. She wrote the foreword to the book and will be on site at the event.
